Some owners allowed marriages between slaves (formal or informal) while others actively separated couples. Because plantation owners preferred an all-male workforce where possible, there were many more male than female African slaves. Here, generation after generation of slaves brought by from Western Africa, mainly Portuguese Angola, worked 18 to 20 hours per day and lived in simple mud or wooden huts. Since 1558, it also became the first slave market in the New World. The city was the country’s political center, its main seaport, and an important business hub for trading with Africa and the Far East. Founded in 1549, this settlement was the first capital of Portuguese America until 1763. ![]() It was born in the engenhos or sugar cane mills in Salvador da Bahia, in the northeastern coast of the country. Once upon a time in Salvador da Bahia: Samba de roda There are at least nine styles of samba all of them have a story to tell. The word ‘samba’ is derived from the Angolan word ‘semba’, which means ‘naval bump’ and symbolizes an invitation to invoke the favor of the gods through rhythm, song, and dance. The history of this music and dance is a testament to a people’s will to maintain their cultural roots and artistic heritage. The origins of samba, however, are very distant from the glamour of Rio de Janeiro’s Carnival, both in spirit and geography. It’s the world’s greatest samba party and you’re surrounded by people dancing in flashy costumes and headpieces made of ruffle boas, feathers, sequins, beads, and fringes. In other states such as Sao Paulo and Minas Gerais, the transformation of Lambada to Brazilian Zouk Dance originated in different ways creating different styles of Brazilian Zouk.Įven though this dance gets its name from a French style of music, it is still considerate a Brazilian dance, based on its direct ties to Lambada and being created in Brazil by Brazilian dancers.Dancers at Sambodromo, Rio de JaneiroYou feel the rhythm of drums and cymbals and your feet follow the beat along with 80,000 people that enjoy the Rio de Janeiro Carnival Parade at the Sambódromo Marquês de Sapucaí. Many of the teachers and students at Jaime Aroxa Dance School helped contribute to the spread of this new teaching methodology, which spread to other schools and other cities around the world. Following that, other movements were created such as “Raul”, “Soltinho” and “Bonus”, which gave origin to our popular basic kit. These changes started to help students learn the dance faster. The linear Salsa also influenced them to create linear movements like “Lateral” and “Bonus”, because the Lambada movements were all circular. With the influence of other Brazilian dance styles such as Samba de Gafieira, they included a new basic travelling forward and backwards. In Rio de Janeiro, Jaime Aroxa, Renata Peçanha and Adilio Porto at Jaime Aroxa Dance School realised that in class it was difficult to teach the Lambada basics on the spot. This transformation happened in many states in Brazil. ![]() However, Zouk music was slower than Lambada, so it was necessary to make alterations to the dance including to its basic steps. Soon the Lambada dance style started to adapt to the Zouk music. The Lambada lovers saw an opportunity to continue dancing their beloved dance style. ![]() In mid 90’s Brazilians discovered the rhythm Zouk from French Caribbean, which had many similarities with Lambada music.
